High Level Noise Test
Overview
This test verifies that high-level signal noise will not significantly affect the accuracy of subsequent measurements. Measurement calibration of the system is not required for this test. This test requires that you press specified front panel keys, or use a mouse to make choices from the displayed menu(s). The key and menu selections used in this test are shown below. The test below is valid for all models and option combinations.
Procedure
1. Connect Test Ports 1 and 2 together using a high-quality through line.
2. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Utilities | System. The right side SYSTEM menu appears.
a. Click on Setup. The SETUP menu appears.
b. Click on Preset Setup. The PRESET SETUP menu appears.
c. Select Default.
3. Reset the VNA by pressing the front panel Preset Key.
Frequency and Set Power
4. On the right side menus, select MAIN MENU | Frequency. The FREQUENCY menu appears.
a. Observe that the displayed FREQUENCY menu.
b. Note that the Start and Stop values are the low-end and high-end frequencies.
5. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Channel | Averaging. The right side AVERAGING menu appears.
a. Click on the Averaging Factor button. On the displayed field toolbar, enter 40. Click the Enter button and then click the X at the end of the toolbar to close it.
b. Click on the Averaging toggle button and toggle to ON.
Select Upper Left LCD Channel - TR1
6. Select the upper left LCD channel using the mouse by clicking on Tr1 S11 Refl Smith Imped.
The trace name has additional resolution and unit information appended to the displayed label.
7. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Display. The right side DISPLAY menu appears.
a. Click Trace Format button. The TRACE FORMAT menu appears.
b. Select Log Mag.
8. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Response.
a. The right side RESPONSE menu appears.
b. Click S21.
9. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Marker. The right side MARKERS [1] menu appears.
a. Click Marker Setup. The MARKER SETUP menu appears.
b. Toggle the Statistics Display button to ON.
10. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Display. The right-side DISPLAY menu appears.
a. Click on the View Trace button, the right-side VIEW TRACE menu appears.
b. After at least one complete forward and reverse sweep has occurred, select the Store Data to Memory button.
c. On the VIEW TRACE menu, the Data, Memory, Data & Memory, Data, Memory Math, and Off buttons become available.
d. Select the Data, Memory Math button.
11. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Scale. The right-side SCALE menu appears.
a. Click on the Resolution button. The Resolution field toolbar appears above the main display.
b. Enter 0.01 dB/Div.
c. Click the X to close the field toolbar.
d. After at least one complete forward and reverse sweep has occurred, view the trace statistics display titled Stat. Range: Entire Sweep.
e. Verify that the Std. Dev. measurement for this trace is less than 0.08 dB.
Select Upper Right LCD Channel - TR2
12. Select the upper right LCD channel using the mouse by clicking on Tr2 S12 Trans Log M+P.
The trace name has additional resolution and unit information appended to the displayed label.
13. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Display. The right side DISPLAY menu appears.
a. Click Trace Format button.
b. The TRACE FORMAT menu appears.
c. Select Log Mag.
14. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Response.
a. The right side RESPONSE menu appears.
b. Click S12.
15. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Marker. The right side MARKERS [1] menu appears.
a. Click Marker Setup. The MARKER SETUP menu appears.
b. Toggle the Statistics Display button to ON.
16. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Display. The right-side DISPLAY menu appears.
a. Click on the View Trace button, the right-side VIEW TRACE menu appears.
b. After at least one complete forward and reverse sweep has occurred, select the Store Data to Memory button.
c. On the VIEW TRACE menu, the Data, Memory, Data & Memory, Data, Memory Math, and Off buttons become available.
d. Select the Data, Memory Math button.
17. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Scale. The right-side SCALE menu appears.
a. Click on the Resolution button. The Resolution field toolbar appears above the main display.
b. Enter 0.1 dB/Div.
c. Click the X to close the field toolbar.
d. After at least one complete forward and reverse sweep has occurred, view the trace statistics display titled Stat. Range: Entire Sweep.
e. Verify that the Std. Dev. measurement for this trace is less than 0.008 dB.
Select Lower Left LCD Channel - TR3
18. Select the lower left LCD channel using the mouse by clicking on Tr3 S21 Trans LogM+P.
The trace name has additional resolution and unit information appended to the displayed label.
19. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Display. The right side DISPLAY menu appears.
a. Click Trace Format button. The TRACE FORMAT menu appears.
b. Select Phase.
20. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Response.
a. The right side RESPONSE menu appears.
b. Click S21.
21. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Marker. The right side MARKERS [1] menu appears.
a. Click Marker Setup. The MARKER SETUP menu appears.
b. Toggle the Statistics Display button to ON.
22. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Display. The right-side DISPLAY menu appears.
a. Click on the View Trace button, the right-side VIEW TRACE menu appears.
b. After at least one complete forward and reverse sweep has occurred, select the Store Data to Memory button.
c. On the VIEW TRACE menu, the Data, Memory, Data & Memory, Data, Memory Math, and Off buttons become available.
d. Select the Data, Memory Math button.
23. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Scale. The right-side SCALE menu appears.
a. Click on the Resolution button. The Resolution field toolbar appears above the main display.
b. Enter 0.1 º (Deg) /Div.
c. Click the X to close the field toolbar.
d. After at least one complete forward and reverse sweep has occurred, view the trace statistics display titled Stat. Range: Entire Sweep.
e. Verify that the Std. Dev. measurement for this trace is less than 0.08 º (Deg).
Select Lower Right LCD Channel - TR4
24. Select the lower right LCD channel using the mouse by clicking on Tr4 S22 Refl Smith Imped.
The trace name has additional resolution and unit information appended to the displayed label.
25. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Display. The right side DISPLAY menu appears.
a. Click Trace Format button. The TRACE FORMAT menu appears.
b. Select Phase.
26. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Response.
a. The right side RESPONSE menu appears.
b. Click S12.
27. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Marker. The right side MARKERS [1] menu appears.
a. Click Marker Setup. The MARKER SETUP menu appears.
b. Toggle the Statistics Display button to ON.
28. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Display. The right-side DISPLAY menu appears.
a. Click on the View Trace button, the right-side VIEW TRACE menu appears.
b. After at least one complete forward and reverse sweep has occurred, select the Store Data to Memory button.
c. On the VIEW TRACE menu, the Data, Memory, Data & Memory, Data Memory Math, and Off buttons become available.
d. Select the Data, Memory Math button.
29. At the top of the display, select MENU BAR | Trace | Scale. The right-side SCALE menu appears.
a. Click on the Resolution button. The Resolution field toolbar appears above the main display.
b. In the toolbar, enter 0.1 º(Deg)/Div and then click the Enter button.
c. Resolution is now set to 0.1 º(Deg)/Div in the stated Resolution.
d. Click the X to close the field toolbar.
e. After at least one complete forward and reverse sweep has occurred, view the trace statistics display titled Stat. Range: Entire Sweep.
f. Verify that the Std. Dev. measurement for this trace is less than 0.08 º(Deg).
